Backyard Retreat

Annapolis, MD

Proving that a building can be both irreverent and respectful, this project slotted an almost 2,000 SF modern “out building” into a narrow lot behind a traditional home. The structure contains a garage for the client’s electric car, an indoor pool, a writing studio and potting shed. Each of these disparate uses is given its own level and shape in the final design, thereby creating a cohesive whole. The use of different volumes allows the building to fit seamlessly and sensitively into the existing landscape and accommodates important technological requirements including solar panels and a storm water collection and irrigation system for watering the extensive gardens. Large windows at each end of the building give the interior a sense of spaciousness and connection to the outdoors while a barrel roofline over the pool provides a complement to the square main house.
