ezStorage Alexandria
The Siena Corporation went looking for a location for a new ezStorage facility in the City of Alexandria and found it next to the police station on Wheeler Avenue. The site was formerly used by a contractor for their offices and storage of equipment. The most interesting part about this site is that the historic main building- a four story brick mill that was constructed around 1812 and functioned as a mill into the 20th century. It has served as an office building with a recent addition being used as auto repair shop. The water wheel is not coming back but the addition is being removed along with the canopy in order to restore the building to a state closer resembling it’s original construction. The historic mill building will function as the office for a new five-story, 129,000 SF storage facility that aims to be certified LEED Silver. Since the new building is on the same site as the historic mill building, it required the approval from the Alexandria Board of Architectural Review. The design of the building was a bit of a departure from the previous architecture of a typical ezStorage building. It included more masonry, varied proportions, and corbel details to align itself with the historic architectural language of the city of Alexandria. RPH helped the client navigate through the historic approval process. The project is currently under permit review and construction is expected to start later this year.
