A visionary client aspired to return a circa 1904 mansion in the heart of a historic district into a hub for her business and a home for herself. Years of repurposing had left little of the home’s original character and the renovation would mandate new systems to bring the structure up to modern codes. A combination of exploratory demolition and archival research helped Studio 343 identify the mansion’s original layout and trim. Two working fireplaces were restored and the former servant’s quarters were converted into a loft apartment for the owner. The thoughtful design encompasses the client’s wish list including flexible work areas, entertaining spaces and a catering kitchen, as well as necessities like accessible restrooms and sprinklers, without sacrificing the home’s residential grandeur.
