Maddy's Tap Room

Washington, DC

Devotees of the original Maddy’s Tap Room in the District enjoyed the rough patina of the 60-year-old bar as much as the many beers on tap. When the client opened a second location in a 3,000 SF space in a business district, the new Maddy’s needed to preserve its pub heritage while meeting the landlord’s mandate that the location be a refined eatery. Working in a small space dotted with concrete structural columns and mechanical chases, Studio 343 designed a central square dining area exposed to an open kitchen and flanked by built-in tables with benches and a massive, 40’ long, L-shaped bar. The finishes are a combination of gleaming white tile and reclaimed barn wood, a juxtaposition that is as industrial and gritty as the original Maddy’s, but matches the sophistication of the surrounding neighborhood.
